How to order food in Cologne

Asking for the traditional “Halve Hahn” in Cologne for sure will cause some confusion for tourists, and even Germans alike. After seeing this on a menu, and looking it up in your dictionary, or more likely your translation app,  you’ll be excited to order “half a chicken”, and soon start the feast.

If you are lucky enough to have a cool waiter, or a bilingual menu, you’ll discover that this dish is only a simple bread roll with cheese. 

So, now you know, when you ask for a chicken dish or sandwich, make sure you have ordered correctly, or you will find yourself with another piece of bread!
